Tyler J. Wakefield, 29, of Manchester, TN, and formerly of Hummelstown, passed away Thursday, July 9, 2020.

Born in Harrisburg on February 8, 1991, he was the son of Malcolm G. and Lucille A. Wakefield of Hummelstown.

Tyler was a forester with the Tennessee Division of Forestry. A 2009 graduate of Lower Dauphin High School, he was a member of its Envirothon Team, National Honor Society, Tri M Music Honor Society, football team and was Co-captain of their lacrosse team. Tyler also played string bass in the school’s orchestra and went on to represent Lower Dauphin in Hershey Festival of Strings and District Orchestra. He graduated from Penn State University in 2013 where he was a member of the Penn State Woodsmen Team, and competed in the ESPNU Collegiate Lumber Jack Competition. Tyler was a Life Scout of the Boy Scouts of America. With his love and talent for music, Tyler served on the Trinity United Methodist Church Praise Team in Hummelstown before moving to Tennessee; and taught himself to play the banjo. An outdoor enthusiast-extreme, Tyler loved hiking, hunting, fishing and kayaking.

In addition to his parents, Tyler is survived by three brothers, John M. Wakefield and his wife, Beth, of Carlisle, Zachary L. Wakefield and his girlfriend, Shaye, of Morristown, NJ, and Ethan A. Wakefield of Fort Drum, NY; a niece and nephew, Brynn and Mitchell both of Carlisle; his paternal aunt, Cindy Wakefield of Campbelltown; and a maternal uncle, Dr. John E. Atkinson of Newbury Park, CA.

A celebration of Tyler’s life will be held Friday, July 17, 2020, at 6 PM in the Trinity United Methodist Church, 210 West Main Street, Hummelstown, with The Rev. Robert J. Kazinski officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family Friday in the church’s narthex from 4:30 PM until time of the service. Live stream of the service will be available at

Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, is handling the arrangements.

Tyler loved pawpaw trees and enjoyed making pawpaw ice cream. Tyler’s family invites you to purchase a pawpaw tree of your own and plant it in his memory or donate to the Tyler Wakefield Pawpaw Tree Fund via GoFundMe which will be used to plant pawpaw trees in Pennsylvania.
