She was born on December 8, 1952, in Sunbury to her father, the late Robert L. and mother, Alta Rae (Heaps) Yerg.
Karen graduated from Shikellamy High School in 1970. Along with her twin sister, Kathy, she went to and graduated from nursing school in Danville. With her LPN certificate in her hand she moved to the Hershey area where she worked in Pediatrics at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Karen was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Harrisburg and Hershey Wards, where she was a Greeter, and a member and Correspondent Coordinator of the church’s Women’s Relief Society. Karen was President of the local chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and enjoyed their sisterhood and bonding. She served in functions throughout the years that brought her lifetime friendships. She loved the color purple, traveling, cooking, hosting parties and spending time with family and friends. Most of all she adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Karen is survived by her husband of 13 years, Dale G. Kelley, whom she married on May 18, 2007; son, Matthew R. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Keith Yerg.
