I worked alongside Joyce's afloat analysis branch when I started as a Navy civilian in 1980. I can relate some meaningful conversations from back then, and also more recently.

For now I'll record that in that work environment, when she influenced how the new analysts were trained, she had us read Pub 485. This included afloat supply procedures, that is how documents were used on ships. At the time this was frustrating and a bit boring. What use to someone in doing applied math in an inventory analysis setting?

But much later I realized that these procedures were key to understanding the customers that we all supported and to better communicate with the officers with whom we worked. Especially, about 25 years later, when I helped manage afloat systems, I often wished that I had a better understanding of these procedures.

Joyce had the foresight to see and the sense of responsibility to require what would be best for us new people.

The photo chosen here is perfect. It shows her as cheerfully confident, and ready to help.

Sandy and family - I just watched the livestream service for your dear mother. It was beautiful. I hung on every heartfelt word that you spoke. You truly captured the essence of whom she was, as I remember her. Years ago, when you were a baby, and when my son was a baby, … we got together a couple times. I've never seen her so happy, as when you entered her life. That love for you will surely be with you always, and will sustain you in your life. May God Bless you and your family, with strength, wisdom, and the love she put in your hearts. Sincerely, Cindy Miceli (I worked for her and with her)
