Obituary

Obituary for Irvin Tarrence "Buddy" Edgar

Irvin T. Edgar, affectionately known to everyone as “Buddy”, 87, of Hershey, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2020, at Arden Court of Susquehanna, Linglestown. Born in Palmerton on April 26, 1932, he was the son of the late Lemuel and Catherine DeRemer Edgar.

At the time of Buddy’s retirement, he was the Bureau Director for the Pennsylvania Department of Education having previously served as a Science Advisor for the State, and was a former Biology Teacher at Raub Junior High School in Allentown. He was a private pilot who owned his own plane, so upon retiring Buddy became a flight instructor and taught ground school. His greatest joy, however, came from being a lifelong jazz pianist.

Buddy graduated from Allentown High School in 1950; was a graduate of the Kutztown State Teacher’s College; received Master’s Degrees from Temple University, Philadelphia, and Syracuse University, New York; and earned his Doctorate in Education from Lehigh University, Bethlehem. He was a member of the Hummelstown United Church of Christ. Buddy was also a member of the Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz. An avid hobbyist, he built and flew radio-controlled airplanes; and besides flying his plane, found pleasure in riding his motorcycle and skiing with friends.

Buddy was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn L. Lutz Edgar on May 29, 1999, and by a sister, Jane Fisher. He is survived by two daughters, Michelle Edgar Dugan wife of James M. of North Bend, OH, and Paula Bird wife of Bob Tull of Wimberley, TX; and one granddaughter, Serena Kathleen Dugan of New York City.

A service to celebrate Buddy’s life will be held at a later date. Interment will be in the Grandview Cemetery, Allentown. Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions made to the Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz, 5721 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17112, or online through friendsofjazz.org.

We at the Friends of Jazz are so sorry to learn of Buddy’s passing. He was one of our most devoted members and fans. Until recently, he and Dee would attend and enjoy almost all of our concerts and events. Our condolences to Dee and to his family. We will miss him!

To Buddy Edgar Relatives,

I was a member of the Bureau of Curriculum and Instruction during the time Irvin became the Bureau Director. He was one of our best Directors. He listened, he took action and he was a friend to all of us. Over the 27 years I was in the Bureau, we had a number of Directors and as a former classroom teacher Buddy understood what had to be done to achieve positive results for Pennsylvania students.

I used to call upon Buddy to provide his wonderful musical talents at our Cosmopolitan of the Capital Region Club social gatherings. He played the piano and keyboard and sang for us which was enjoyed and appreciated by all who gathered at those events. We all recognized Buddy as a multi-talented guy and we will miss him very much.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Very Sincerely,
Bill Dallam, Chief, Division of Federal Programs, Retired
