Obituary for Carl E. "Curly" Billow

Carl E. “Curly” Billow, 93, formerly of Union Deposit, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2019, in the Cedar Haven Health Care Center, Lebanon.

Born in Mount Joy on February 4, 1926, he was the son of the late Jacob Norman and Mary E. Reisch Billow.

Curly retired after 40 years from the Wrapping Room of the Hershey Chocolate Company. An expert rifleman, he proudly served with the U.S. Marine Corps Military Police in World War II and participated in action against the enemy in the battle at Tinian in the Marianas Islands. Curly was a life-long member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Mount Joy. He was a life member and former Chaplain of the Bob Smith Detachment Marine Corps League, Hummelstown; and member of the Chocolate Workers Union Local 464, Hershey, and the former Eshleman-Pankake-Wolf Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9639, Shellsville. For thirteen years Curly performed as a drummer with the former Hershey Drum & Bugle Corps. A caring man with a great personality, Curly always greeted you with a smile and a joke or two.

Curly is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ruth Mahek Billow, whom he married on July 1, 1967; one daughter, Paula G. Jiao of Hummelstown; two granddaughters, Jessica Jiao Smith wife of V. Hawley, III, of Jacksonville, FL, and Monica Jiao Ream of Palmyra; four great grandchildren, Caleb Michael Sitler of Palmyra, and Stratten Ruth, Georgia Grace and Holmes Elizabeth Smith all of Jacksonville, FL; and one brother Harold Billow of Mount Joy.

In addition to his parents, Curly was preceded in death by a brother, Levi Billow, and a sister, Eleanor Billow.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 26, 2019, at 10:30 AM in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, with The Rev. Matthew B. Pensinger, his pastor, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Viewing will be Monday at the funeral home from 9:30 AM until time of the service.
