Obituary for Herbert Eugene Utts
On July 30, 2011 Herbert Eugene Utts (Herb) passed from this life into his eternal peace in the presence of family at the Lebanon Veterans Hospital. He met the end with comfort knowing that his life was full, complete, and rich with family and friends.
Herb was born in Three Springs, PA on October 22, 1926 to the late Reverend Edward Zelotus Utts and Ruth Ann Simm Utts. One of eight children, Herb lived his formative years in this area until he went to college.
His college career in the Veterinary Program at Juniata College was cut short by service in the United States Army during the end of World War II. He served his country honorably and was discharged in 1947.
After his service to his country, Herb met and married Shirley Catherine Stine and started his family. He was blessed with five children, all of whom he took great pride in. Always there for them, even through adulthood, he helped them in more ways than can be put down on paper.
Herb eventually worked for and retired as a machine operator from Bethlehem Steel, and also worked as a metallurgist for Standard Steel Works, Lewistown. He also found great pleasure during his life gardening, fishing, hunting and traveling.
Preceding Herb on his last journey were his brothers, Edward Blair Utts and Paul Lehman Utts and his sisters, Mabel Marie Rhodes and Claire Hoffman who went before him to prepare him a place in paradise.
Surviving Herb are his children: James D. Stine, Joseph S. Stine (wed to Sharon Stine), Cathy J. Beer (partner of Dean Rambler), Cheryl R. Utts and Cynthia A. Zegretti (wed to Mark Zegretti); his brothers, Harold L. Utts and James E. Utts; and his sister, Betty J. Burket. Finally, Herb is survived by the jewels of his life; his grandchildren. All were special to him and their lives are made richer with the many fond memories of “Pappy”. They are Samuel W. Zimmerman IV (wed to Sarah E. Zimmerman), Sascha M. Zegretti, Dominique A. Zegretti, Vincente L. Zegretti, Christina J. Beer, Tiffaney R. Beer, Joseph A. Stine, Jonathan W. Rock and Samantha E. Rock. He will also be missed dearly by his wonderful neighbors and friends especially John and Michelle Trish.
Herb will be laid to rest Monday, August 8, 2011 at 10 AM in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with military honors.
Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, is handling the arrangements.
