Obituary for Bertha E. Barnes (Finney)

Bertha E. (Finney) Barnes, aka Bette, formerly of Rutherford Heights and Spring Grove, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2017, four days shy of her 87th birthday surrounded by her family.
Born in Harrisburg on January 1, 1931, she was the youngest of six and the only daughter of the late Bertha E. Leggett Finney and Harry A. Finney, Sr.
Bette is survived by her sons, Chuck and wife Cindi of Wrightsville, and Doug and wife Celeste of Spring Grove; four grandchildren, Jared, Carly, Erin, and Ryan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy C. Barnes, Sr. on January 27, 1994; her parents; and her five older brothers, Harry A. Finney, Jr., Samuel H. Finney, Robert L. Finney, John W. Finney, and Gene W. Finney.
Bette was a teacher for nearly 40 years until she retired in 1992. She taught in the Harrisburg City and Susquehanna Township School Districts. A 1948 graduate of the former Swatara Township High School, she received advance degrees from Shippensburg State Teachers College, Elizabethtown College, and Temple University. As a lifelong member of Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, Rutherford Heights, Bette served as a church organist and Sunday school teacher for more than 30 years. After moving to Spring Grove, she also served as the organist at the Faith Evangelical Congregational Church in Bair. Her life centered around her church and family, especially her grandchildren. Bette also enjoyed traveling and gardening.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2018, at 11 AM in Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 165 North 67th Street, Harrisburg, with The Rev. Dr. Keith A. Blank, officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Harrisburg. A viewing will be held on Thursday in the church from 10 AM until time of the service.
Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, is handling the arrangements.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Bette’s church, Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 165 North 67th Street, Harrisburg, PA 17111.
