Obituary for Jean Anna Miller (Cook)

Jean Anna Cook Miller, 88, of South Hanover Township, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2016, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Titusville, NJ, on June 8, 1928, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Beesburg Cook.

Jean was a devoted homemaker whose family was foremost in her life. She was a member of Stoverdale United Methodist Church. Passionate about her community Jean attended South Hanover Township meetings for over 50 years; serving on the township’s Sewerage Authority for over 25 years. During elections Jean served as the Minority Inspector of District 1 for 55 years. She also held several positions including that of Legal Advisor to the Crestview Manor Civic Association; and found great joy and pride in taking care of its grounds. Jean enjoyed playing cards with her friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Bruce D. Miller, on October 17, 2005; three sisters, Margaret Combs, Agnes Sutterley, and Mary Kent; and two brothers, Robert Cook and William Cook.

Jean is survived by four daughters, Anna Nadine Oliver of Jonestown, Nannette L. Spivey of Hummelstown, Cynthia L. Miller Shoemaker of Chapel Hill, NC, and Penny J. Miller of Elizabethtown; one sister, Nancy A. Apgar of Trenton, NJ; one brother, Lewis C. Cook of White Horse, NJ; five grandchildren, Tina Kadish, Keith Kadish (Wendy), Michelle Shoemaker (Dave), Faith Barski and Trevor Spivey; eleven great grandchildren, Bria, Haley, Ashton, Rylee, Elijah, Gabriel, David Zoe, Nicholas, Ethan, David, and Jeremy (Ashley); and two great great grandchildren, Kaylee and Jackson.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 17, 2016, at 2 PM in Stoverdale United Methodist Church, Middletown Road, Derry Township, with Pastor Scott R. Hover and The Rev. JoAnn M. Darrow officiating. Interment will be in the Stoverdale Cemetery. Viewing will be held Friday in the church from 1 PM until time of the services.

It is our desire that your attire reflect Jean’s favorite color of purple.

Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions made to Stoverdale United Methodist Church, PO Box 153, Hummelstown, PA 17036, or to Hospice of Central PA, 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
