Obituary for Betty L. Espenshade (Miller)
Betty L. Miller Espenshade, 84, of Elizabethtown, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2017, in the Harrisburg Hospital.
Born in Elizabethtown on November 23, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Earl Harry and Dorothy Ann Miller.
Betty was a dedicated Registered Nurse who retired as a civilian from the U. S. Army 97th General Hospital, Frankfurt, Germany, and as a Charge Nurse from the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, Lebanon. She also retired from the former Villa Teresa Nursing Home, where she was the Wound Care Specialist and Quality Care Nurse. During her nursing career Betty worked at the former Harrisburg State Hospital; in Syracuse, New York, and Albuquerque, New Mexico; at the Masonic Homes, Elizabethtown; and as the Spinal Bifida Coordinator at the former Elizabethtown Crippled Children’s Hospital. Betty was recognized for her work organizing a recreational program for the Penn State Children’s Hospital, Hershey.
She was a 1951 graduate of Elizabethtown High School, and graduated from the former Polyclinic Hospital Nursing School. Betty was a member of Neidig Memorial United Methodist Church, Oberlin, where she volunteered her time and was a member of the Neidig Women’s Group. She was a member of the Polyclinic Nurses Alumni Association; and volunteered at the Oberlin Fire Company making Easter eggs. Betty loved to travel. Most important to her, however, was her family. Betty was the glue who was always there to help her children and grandchildren with anything they needed.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald L. Espenshade, Sr., on June 8, 2015; a son, Philip B. Espenshade on August 13, 2012; two sisters, Annie Sager and Ethel Englehart; and two brothers, Bob Miller and Earl Miller,
Betty is survived by two sons, Donald L. Espenshade, Jr. companion of Callie Jenkins of Carlisle, and David J. Espenshade husband of Kendra of Wilmington, NC; one daughter, Susan J. Bonilla wife of Joseph of Hummelstown; eight grandchildren, Lisa M. Rider wife of Brent M., Kelsey L. Espenshade, Justin M. Worley husband of Jessica, Benjamin R. Espenshade husband of Jen, Bradford S. Espenshade companion of Kara Collins, Nicholas A. Espenshade, Christopher M. Espenshade, and Tyler J. Espenshade; five great grandchildren, Gavin Michael Worley, Ella Grace Espenshade, Reid Coen Worley, Caroline Elizabeth Rider, and Chloe Grace Espenshade; two sisters, Corrine Dupler wife of Ray, and Virgie Dunkleberger, both of Elizabethtown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Friday, July 28, 2017, at 11 AM in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, with Pastor Steven S. Cowfer, officiating. Interment will be in Grand View Memorial Park, Annville. Friends will be received for the viewing Friday in the funeral home from 10 AM until time of the service.
