James Albert Zerbe, 88, of the Ecumenical Retirement Community, passed away on Monday, April 18, 2016, in the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg.
Born in Tyrone on August 18, 1927, he was the son of the late Charles F. and Matilda Burley Zerbe.
Jim retired as a salesman from BSC Litho, Inc., Penbrook. He was a 1945 graduate of Tyrone High School. Jim proudly served with the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II. He was a member of the Linglestown Life United Methodist Church. Jim was also a member of the Robert Burns Lodge #464, F&AM, Harrisburg; Harrisburg Consistory A.A.S.R., Tall Cedars Harrisburg Forest #43, the Zembo Shrine, and the Shriner’s International. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 281, Tyrone; and member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge #212, Tyrone. A sports fan, Jim was a Penn State football season ticket holder for 35 years; and an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. Even though he traveled all over the world, his favorite place was Cape May, NJ. However, most important to Jim was spending time with his family.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Marjorie Taylor Zerbe, whom he married on July 31, 1948; one son, Charles L. Zerbe husband of Barbara J. of Hummelstown; two grandchildren, Carly J. Reid wife of Shawn of Wallingford, and Jason C. Zerbe husband of Eileen of Yardley; four great grandchildren, Blayden Reid, Blayke Reid, and Brock Reid all of Wallingford, and Zachary Zerbe of Yardley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a great grandson, Tanner James Zerbe; and two brothers, Farran Zerbe and C. Burley Zerbe.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 25, 2016 at 12:30 PM in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, with The Rev. Donald Kelly, Chaplain of Ecumenical Retirement Center, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Township. Family and friends are invited to the viewing Monday in the funeral home from 11:30 AM until time of the service.
