Obituary for Dorothy S. Bonawitz (Swanson)
Dorothy Swanson Bonawitz of Hummelstown passed away on her 97th birthday, Sunday, June 11, 2017, in the Frey Village, Middletown.
Born in Dagus Mines, Elk County, on June 11, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Elsa Carlson Swanson.
Dottie retired after 45 years of service as a secretary from the Pennsylvania Department of Banking. She was a graduate of the former Hoff’s Business College. Dottie was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hummelstown, and was a member and Sunday School pianist of the former Olivet Presbyterian Church, Harrisburg. She was a former member of the Harrisburg Charter Chapter of the American Business Women of America (ABWA) where Dottie was named Woman of the Year, and was a member of the former Rockville Bridge Chapter of ABWA. She enjoyed playing hymns on the piano; and found great pleasure in playing double pinochle with three decks.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Bonawitz, on January 7, 2002; a step-son, John W. Bonawitz; and four brothers, O. Walter Swanson, Vernon F. Swanson, David S. Swanson, and Carl Arthur Swanson.
Dottie is survived by one step-son, James E. Bonawitz husband of Joan E. of Hummelstown; a step-daughter, Shirley A. Derr wife of Daniel M. of Hummelstown; a daughter-in-law, Shirley M. Bonawitz; two nieces, Becky Eldridge wife of Jim, and Verna Nickel; three nephews, Raymond Swanson, Daniel Swanson, and David Swanson; a dear friend, Alice Stauffer; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and ten great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at 11 AM in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, with The Rev. Jason R. Mackey, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Earlyville Cemetery, Elk County. Friends are invited to the viewing Wednesday in the funeral home from 10 AM until time of the services.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 210 West Main Street, Hummelstown, PA 17036; or to Frey Village, 1020 North Union Street, Middletown, PA 17057; or to Hospice of Central Pennsylvania, 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
