Joan L Yoder (Bomberger)
Joan L. Bomberger Yoder, 59, of Dauphin, passed away Friday, July 26, 2013, in the Carolyn Croxton-Slane Residence, Linglestown.
Born in Pensacola, FL, on September 3, 1953, she was the daughter of the George Kreider Bomberger of Harrisburg, and the late Julia Rutter Bomberger.
Joan served as a Literacy Consultant for SIL International, Wycliffe Bible Translator’s sister organization. She worked with Sudanese languages in Sudan and refuge settlements in Eastern Africa. Her areas of specialization were developing alphabets for unwritten languages and training minority language speakers to produce reading materials for their language groups. Upon her return to the United States in 2000, Joan continued with SIL as an editor and online instructor.
She wasa 1971 graduate of Palmyra High School; received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Shippensburg University in 1975; a Masters of Theological Studies from Regent College, Vancouver, Canada; and did her graduate studies in Linguistics at SIL International, Dallas, TX. Joan was a member of the Evangelical Free Church of Hershey; and also participated in the ladies’ groups of Clarks Valley Zion Evangelical Free Church in Dauphin.
Joan is survived by loving husband, James F. Yoder, whom she married on June 5, 2004; her father; one brother, Robert Bomberger and wife Mary of Harrisburg; one nephew, Neil Bomberger, wife Anne Coleman, and two great nephews, George and Moses of Arlington, MA; and one niece, Chloe Bomberger, of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by several cousins; half uncles, Ralph, William, Harry and Edward Bomberger; and her husband’s three siblings, Virginia Bechtel, Geralyn McClarren, and Kenneth Yoder, and their families.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 2, 2013, at 11 AM in the Evangelical Free Church of Hershey, 330 Hilltop Road, Hummelstown, PA 17036, with The Rev. Omar B. Zook, Jr., her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Lower Paxton Township. Friends are invited to the viewing in the church Friday from 10 AM until time of the service.
