Obituary for James B. Alter
James “Jim” B. Alter, 86, of Hummelstown, passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Funkstown, MD, on February 24, 1926, he was the son of the late John E. and Lottie C. Ridge Alter.
Jim was the President of the Hummelstown Fuel Oil Service Co., Inc., which he founded in October of 1956. He had also worked for 22 years as an electrician for the former Pennsylvania Railroad. Jim attended school in Funkstown, MD. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in Italy during World War II. Jim was inducted into the Voters Hall of Fame for 50 years of consecutive voting. He was a former member and President of the Hummelstown Borough Council. Jim was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hummelstown. He was also a member of the Brownstone Lodge #666, F&AM, the Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Shrine, Zembo Antique & Classic Car Unit, and the Hershey Shrine Club. Jim was a member and Paul Harris Fellow of the Hummelstown Rotary Club; and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1687, Hummelstown. A car enthusiast, Jim was a member of the Model A Ford Club, the Antique Automobile Club of America, and Past President of the Hershey Region of the Antique Automobile of America.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Jean Daihl Alter, in February of 1994; two sisters; two brothers; and a step son, Jim Butch.
He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Jean Butch Alter, whom he married on July 12, 2002; one son, Earl H. Spillers husband of Darlene of Hummelstown; two daughters, Alice H. Damon wife of George of Overland Park, KS, and Diane M. Tritch of Phoenix, AZ; two stepsons, John Butch husband of Beverly of Brookfield, OH, and Park Butch of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and one step daughter, Sondra Correll wife of Lonnie of Dothan, AL; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and 10 step great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at 11 AM in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, with The Rev. Thomas A. Maurer and The Rev. Robert P. Stokes officiating. Interment with military honors will be in the Hummelstown Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to the viewings in the funeral home Monday, October 1, 2012, from 6 to 9 PM, and Tuesday from 10 AM until time of the service. Masonic Services will be held Monday at 5:45 PM in the funeral home.
