Obituary for Irene Ritter
Irene L. Person Ritter, 87, of the Cedar Brook Nursing Center, Allentown, and formerly of Chambers Hill, passed away Saturday, November 5, 2011, in the home.
Born in Easton on December 16, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Rose Bell Person.
Irene retired as an engineer assistant with the former Bell Telephone Company; and had been a Registered Nurse. She was a graduate of Easton High School and the Nursing Program of the Easton Hospital. Irene was a veteran of the US Army Nurse Corps serving on the Frances Y. Slanger Hospital Ship during World War II. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hummelstown, where she was a former Sunday School teacher, and Past President of the former Women of Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and its representative to Synod. Irene was Past President of the Hummelstown Women’s Club; and former secretary of the Chambers Hill Civic Association. She loved to travel with her husband,; was an avid reader; and enjoyed doing needlepoint, and playing bridge and pinochle.
Irene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl G. Ritter, on April 2, 2003; and two sisters, Elizabeth M. Keefer and G. Lorraine Koenitzer.
She is survived by one son, Carl G. Ritter, Jr. husband of Deborah Keefer of Milan, MI; one daughter, Debra K. Weninger wife of Thomas J. Weninger of York; three grandchildren, Shalena M. Eaton wife of Oliver Eaton of Culver, IN, Kay Weninger of York, and Jason P. Keefer of Playa Del Rey, CA.
A memorial service be held Thursday, November 10, 2011, at 11 AM in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 West Main Street, Hummelstown, with The Rev. Wayne D. Moritz and Diaconal Minister Marsha L. Roscoe officiating. Inurnment with military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Township. Friends are invited to visit with the family Thursday in the church’s parlor from 10 AM until time of the service.
